For the first time Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec tested themselves with a project related to electronics, joining Samsung Senior VP Yun-Je Kang (head of design team in Visual Display) to conceive a new kind of TV, they named Serif TV.
Premiering next week (21st–27th September) at London Design Festival, Samsung Serif TV is the result of the studying of both the object and its interaction with the space around it by the Bouroullec brothers.
Serif TV’s silhouette, seen in profile, resemble a capital “I” in a serif font. The upper surface can serve as a little shelf while the lower act as the base, meaning it can stand on it with no need of any other support. Seen from the front, Samsung Serif TV is defined by a single, seamless frame, one colour and one shape.
The TV comes with attachable legs allowing it to be placed directly on the floor or wherever you want, even at the centre of the room, it is manipulable so suitable for any situation. Another plus is the back of the TV, usually a side to hide, now has been covered with a woven fabric panel (matched to the colour of the device) to conceal all the connectors.
“We had the intuition that over the last few decades, screen design has been driven by developments in technology without much sense of our own culture and way of life; the design of Samsung Serif TV has been a conscious step away from this and forms a new form of technology that is dedicated to the domestic environment. […] What we were looking for was a solid presence that would sit naturally in various environments, just like an object or a piece of furniture” explained Erwan Bouroullec.
The designer duo also also worked on the redesign of the interface and the experience inside Serif. Serif comes in 3 sizes, Serif, Serif Medium, and Serif Mini and in 3 colors: ivory white, dark blue and red.

// Per la prima volta Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec si sono cimentati con un progetto strettamente collegato all’elettronica, unendosi al Senior Vice President di Samsung Yun-Je (capo del design team nel reparto Visual Display) per concepire un nuovo genere di TV, che ha preso il nome di Serif TV.
Risultato dell’analisi effettuata dai Bouroullec sull’oggetto e sulla sua interazione con lo spazio circostante, Samsung Serif TV sarà presentata la prossima settimana (dal 21 al 27 Settembre) in occasione del London Design Festival.
La sagoma della Serif Tv, vista di profilo, ricorda una “I” maiuscola in un font con le grazie. La superficie superiore può servire da piccola mensola mentre la parte sottostante si comporta da base, eliminando la necessità di ulteriori supporti. Vista dal davanti invece, Samsung Serif TV è definita da un’unica cornice senza interruzioni, da un colore e da una forma.
Il dispositivo include anche gambe attaccabili che permettono il suo posizionamento direttamente sul pavimento o ovunque si voglia, anche al centro della stanza, adattandosi ad ogni situazione. Altro plus è rappresentato dal retro della TV, solitamente un lato da nascondere, che ora viene coperto con un pannello rivestito in tessuto (dello stesso colore della tv) per celare tutti i cavi elettrici.
“Abbiamo avuto la sensazione che durante l’ultimo decennio, il progetto dei televisori sia stato guidato dagli sviluppi della tecnologia senza però tener conto della nostra cultura e del nostro modo di vivere; il progetto della Samsung Serif TV rappresenta un allontanarsi consapevole da tutto ciò e un nuovo modo di intendere la tecnologia che si concentra sull’ambiente domestico. […] Quello che cercavamo era una presenza solida che si adattasse naturalmente a diversi ambienti, così come qualsiasi oggetto o pezzo di arredamento” ha spiegato Erwan Bouroullec.
I designer hanno lavorato inoltre anche alla riprogettazione dell’interfaccia e dell’esperienza utente di Serif.
Serif TV è prevista in 3 dimensioni, Serif, Serif Medium, e Serif Mini ed in 3 colori: bianco avorio, blu scuro e rosso.
