In occasion of Stockholm Furniture design week, the Bouroullec brothers launched two curtains design for Kvadrat, Rennes and Chainette. Those are the first realizations out of Seventeen screens the exhibition opened in Tel Aviv back in the end of 2015. Those two collections are based on embroidery techniques, they share the same pattern but they are different.
Rennes features wide, diagonal and vertical, densely stitched stripes which intersect, creating bold colorful forms. Chainette is more subtle, it’s made of thin lines embroidered with braids.
Those curtains are designed to play with light and shadow. Rennes gets intensely colorful when lighten, where Chainette is more transparent. The thin indication of colors inside the lines softly react to the light.
Embroidery, even mechanical, has a very subtle way of enhancing the curtains and what happens when you see through. The yarns somehow model the surface while informing very smartly the colors. It still conveys a certain memory of old handcrafted embroideries, but the approach to patterns and the context of Kvadrat brought the duo to this very engineered and precise technique.
«Embroidery has always been something important to us. The area where we come from, Brittany, has a long tradition about it. We saw in various occasions traditional clothes with gold yarns and colorful patterns. We have always had an interest for it – and for this collection, the delicacy, the lightness of this technique was the proper translation of our drawings.»
// In occasione della Stockholm Design Week, lo studio Bouroullec ha presentato due nuovi progetti di tenda per Kvadrat, Rennes e Chainette. Sono le prime realizzazioni al di fuori della mostra Seventeen screens inaugurata a Tel Aviv alla fine del 2015 e spostatasi nel 2016 a Rennes.
Ottenute con la tecnica del ricamo, le due collezioni presentano lo stesso disegno ma sono differenti per diversi dettagli.
Rennes è ideata con righe cucite che si intersecano per creare forme dai colori vivaci. Chainette ha invece una trama molto più discreta, è infatti pensata come ricamo di sottili linee e trecce.
Per i materiali e per la forma, queste tende sembrano giocare con la luce e le ombre. Rennes acquista un colore intenso quando illuminata, mentre Chainette risulta più trasparente. Le poche tracce di colore all’interno delle linee del tessuto, reagiscono alla luce delicatamente.
Il ricamo, anche se meccanico, impreziosisce le tende in maniera gentile, e ne modifica di conseguenza il modo di vederci attraverso. I fili modellano in qualche mondo la superficie e al contempo ispirano in maniera elegante i colori. Emerge una certa memoria degli antichi ricami fatti a mano, ma l’approccio al pattern insieme al contesto di Kvadrat ha portato i due fratelli a scegliere questa precisa tecnica ingegnerizzata.
«Il ricamo è sempre stato importante per noi. La regione da cui veniamo, la Bretagna, ha una lunga tradizione a riguardo. Ci siamo rifatti a vestiti tradizionali con fili d’oro e pattern colorati visti in passato. Per questa collezione, la delicatezza e la leggerezza di questa tecnica hanno saputo tradurre alla perfezione i nostri disegni. »
