The major exhibition of the autumn at Louisiana is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition in Scandinavia of works by one of the great individualists of contemporary art, Japanese-born Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929). In recent decades Kusama has become world-famous for her artistic universe of radiantly coloured, riotously spreading patterns that cover the surfaces of paintings and sculptures and extend into all-encompassing installations where whole rooms, walls, floors and ceilings are covered in soft forms and dots starkly contrasting in black and yellow or white and red.
In the midst of this boundless visual universe stands Kusama herself; a strikingly present artistic persona who is often not only behind the works, but in front of them – in photographs – often dressed in clothes in the same pattern as the paintings, an artistic camouflage strategy that makes her merge visually with her art.
The exhibition unfolds the artist’s oeuvre in chronological order. A major theme of the exhibition is Kusama’s enduring fascination with infinity – which in her work is a spiritual idea, a cosmological space and a psychological abyss. This great nothingness exerts an attraction compounded of both desire and fearfulness, as reflected by many of her works.
The exhibition is built up of thematic impacts that focus on moments of radical innovation in Kusama’s work. The first section, Sprouts, is dedicated to the works of her youth – the earliest drawings and sketchbooks with nature subjects, which Kusama created as a self-taught artist in the Japanese provinces. The subsequent galleries focus on the ground-breaking change in Kusama’s work in the late 1950s when she emigrated to the USA and became part of the New York avant-garde scene, when she was one of the first artists to develop the installation genre. Particularly worth singling out is the installation Polka Dot Love Room (1967), which has been radically restored for the Louisiana exhibition and will be shown in its entirety for the first time since the 1960s.
A special feature of this exhibition is the involvement of Kusama’s work with fashion and design. The exhibition shows examples of Kusama’s earliest, unique fashion design from the 1960s, when she created patterned avant-garde garments and costumes with close connections to her performances and happenings. In addition, Louisiana present the artist’s most recent design collaborations with among others Japanese Issey Miyake and the French fashion house Louis Vuitton – in the latter case with a full-scale reproduction of a window decoration created for the fashion house – a design with which Kusama inscribed herself in a wider history of avant-garde artists who through the years have taken an interest in the seductive space of the display window.
The exhibition is organised by Louisiana’s curator Marie Laurberg, who has stayed at the artist’s studio in Tokyo for her thorough research in Kusama’s archives and works a. o. The exhibition includes archive material and several important works from the early period that have never been exhibited before.

Nelle ultime decadi Kusama è diventata famosa nel mondo per il suo universo artistico fatto di pattern radiosamente colorati e sfrenatamente coinvolgenti che ricoprono le superfici di dipinti e sculture e si estendono a installazioni onnicomprensive dove intere stanze, pareti, pavimenti e soffitti si ricoprono di forme morbide e pois che contrastano nettamente in nero e giallo o in bianco e rosso.
Nel mezzo di questo universo visivo senza confini sta Yoyoi Kusama stessa; un’impressionante persona artistica che spesso non solo dietro le opere ma davanti ad esse – nelle fotografie – indossa abiti con lo stesso pattern dei dipinti, una strategia artistica di camouflage che fa si che si fonda con la sua arte.
L’esposizione rivela l’opera dell’artista in ordine cronologico. Un importante tema della mostra è la forte attrazione di Kusama per l’infinito – che nei suoi lavori è un’idea spirituale, uno spazio cosmologico ed un abisso psicologico. Questo grande nulla esercita un’attrazione risultato di desiderio e spavento, come riflettono tanti suoi lavori.
L’esposizione è costruita su impatti tematici che si concentrano su momenti di radicale innovazione nel lavoro di Kusama.
La prima sezione, Sprouts (Germogli), è dedicata a lavori della sua giovinezza – i primi disegni e schizzi con la natura come soggetto, che Yoyoi ha creato come autodidatta nelle province giapponesi. Le gallerie successive si focalizzano sul rivoluzionario cambiamento nel lavoro dell’artista risalente alla fine degli anni 50 quando è emigrata negli stati Uniti, diventando parte della scena avanguardista newyorkese, uno dei primi a sviluppare il genere dell’installazione. Particolarmente significativa è l’installazione Polka Dot Love Room (1967), che è stata restaurata per la mostra e sarà esposta nella sua interezza per la prima volta dopo il 1960.
La mostra dedica poi una speciale menzione al coinvolgimento di Kusama nella moda e nel design. Esempi dei primi e unici progetti di moda del 1960, dove ideò capi avanguardisti con pattern e costumi strettamente legati alle sue performance ed eventi. In più, il Louisiana mette in mostra le più recenti collaborazioni dell’artista con il designer giapponese Issey Miyake e con la casa di alta moda Louis Vuitton – nel secondo caso con una riproduzione fedele a grandezza naturale di una vetrina ideata da Yayoi per la casa di moda – un progetto con il quale Yayoi è entrata nella storia degli artisti d’avanguardia che negli anni hanno sviluppato un interesse per lo spazio seducente della vetrina.
La mostra è stata organizzata dalla curatrice del museo Marie Laurberg, che è stata ospite nello studio dell’artista a Tokio per la sua accurata ricerca negli archivi di Kusama. L’esposizione include materiale d’archivio e diversi importanti lavori del primo periodo che non sono stati mai esposti prima d’ora.
