For this year’s Art Basel Unlimited, the fair’s platform for projects that transcend the limitations of a classical art-show, Galleria Continua presented four impressive and monumental installations by Ai WeiWei, Kader Attia, Pascale Marthine Tayou and Shilpa Gupta.

Ai WeiWei // Stacked (2012) 
The famous walk-around installation with 760 stacked bikes highlights the two-wheelers as the principal mean of transportation in China. For this work the artist used bicycles produced by Forever, China’s most common bicycle brand. Visitors are invited to explore the resulting structure from within as well as from any angle; doing that, Ai Weiwei’s exploration of the chinese mass manufacturing becomes evident, a metaphor of the fabrication of power.

// La famosa installazione composta da 760 biciclette mette in risalto la due ruote come il principale mezzo di trasporto cinese. Per quest’opera l’artista ha scelto di utilizzare solo bici prodotte da Forever, il più famoso brand cinese. I visitatori sono invitati a esplorare la struttura dall’interno così come da qualsiasi angolo; così facendo diventa evidente la volontà di Ai WeiWei di esplorare la produzione di massa cinese, una metafora della fabbricazione del potere.

Kader Attia // Arab Spring (2014)
This sculptural installation featured a performance by the artist on the first day’s preview. Attia, in a black hoodie, threw bricks at the display cases to reenact the destruction of the Egypt museum in Cairo. The vandalised and looted cabinets make the final work.

Questa scultorea installazione ha previsto durante il primo giorno di apertura una performance dell’artista. Attia, con indosso una felpa con cappuccio nera, ha lanciato sassi e mattoni contro delle teche in vetro per riprodurre gli episodi di distruzione del Museo Egizio al Cairo. Le teche vandalizzate e razziate formano così l’opera finale.

Pascale Marthine Tayou // Plastic tree (2014)
On a white large wall Tayou placed several tree branches that grow horizontally from the floor and adorned them with colorful plastic bags instead of leaves. By putting the branches in an unusual position he inverted the traditional relationship we have with trees and by using the plastic bags he aimed at highliting the effects of consumerism and pollution on the environment.

// Sulla superficie di un grande muro bianco Tayou ha installato numerosi rami d’albero che si sviluppano orizzontalmente rispetto al pavimento e ha sostituito le foglie con delle colorate buste di plastica. Collocando i rami in questa posizione insolita l’artista intende invertire il tradizionale rapporto che abbiamo con gli alberi mentre utilizzando le buste di plastica ha cercato di sottolineare gli effetti del consumismo e dell’inquinamento sull’ambiente.

Shilpa Gupta // Untitled (2012-2013)
The indian artist has placed in a dark room only lit by a spot light, a massive black rock made of thousand of microphones. The mics emit sounds and voices from myriad of people facing travels and migrations from their homeland. Visitors are invited to sit and experience the misterious atmosphere while thinking about the present.

// L’artista indiana Shilpa Gupta posiziona all’interno di una stanza buia, illuminata solo da un faretto, un enorme masso nero costituito da migliaia di microfoni. Questi emettono costantemente suoni e voci di una miriade di persone costretti ogni giorno a viaggiare e abbandonare la loro terra d’origine. I visitatori sono così invitati a sedersi e vivere l’atmosfera misteriosa mentre si riflette sul presente.
