Presented during this past edition of Tribeca Film Festival, The Artist is Absent tells the story about Martin Margiela’s career from 1989. The man who succeeds in never showing up in front of a camera is described through footages of his memorable fashion shows and through interviews with big names in the fashion industry such as Suzy Menkes, Jean Paul Gaultier and Raf Simons that know him well or had the chance to work with him.
Produced by the YOOX group the film is directed by Alison Chernick who became previously famous directing docu-films about contemporary artists such as Jeff Koons, Matthew Barney and Roy Lichtenstein.
It takes only 12 minutes of your time to know the man behind the hood and his misterious world. We can assure you they’re totally worth it. As Suzy Menkes says: “It’s pretty smart to be the Greta Garbo of fashion. By not showing his identity, I think that Martin Margiela became more exciting. There was a mystery surrounding him”
