Arts and Foods // Rituals since 1851

The intricate relationship between the arts and food will be retraced and analysed in theArts & Foods pavilion, the only thematic area of Expo Milan 2015 to be held in the city. La Triennale, will host the event from 9 April to 1 November 2015.

Located in both the indoor and outdoor areas of La Triennale – 7000 square metres of building and garden space – Arts & Foods will focus on all those visual, sculptural, object-based and environmental forms that, ever since 1851, the year of the first Expo in London, have revolved around the world of food, nutrition, and dining together. The exhibition, curated by Germano Celant and with the display design by Studio Italo Rota, will provide a worldwide overview of the interaction between aesthetics and design in the rituals of eating, as an international event that will use different media to take visitors through time, from the historic to the contemporary, and through forms of expression, creativity and communication in all cultural areas.

Curata da Germano Celant e allestita dallo studio Rota negli spazi interni ed esterni della Triennale – 7.000 metri quadrati circa tra edificio e giardino – Arts & Foods metterà a fuoco la pluralità di linguaggi visuali e plastici, oggettuali e ambientali che dal 1851, anno della prima Expo a Londra, fino ad oggi hanno ruotato intorno al cibo, alla nutrizione e al convivio. Una panoramica mondiale sugli intrecci estetici e progettuali che hanno riguardato i riti del nutrirsi e una mostra internazionale che farà ricorso a differenti media così da offrire un attraversamento temporale, dallo storico al contemporaneo, di tutti i livelli di espressività, creatività e comunicazione espressi in tutte le aree culturali.

VIII Triennale Design Museum: Kitchen and Invaders

Curated by Germano Celant, the eighth edition of the Triennale Design Museum, which coincides with Expo Milano 2015, is entitled “Kitchens & Invaders”. Developed in close collaboration with Silvana Annicchiarico and the TDM, this edition of the Museum takes its inspiration from the title of the science-fiction novel The Body Snatchers, written by Jack Finney in 1955, and from the film based on the book and directed by Don Siegel. Both have came to be seen as bringing about a break and a transformation in the collective imagination. In the story, the aliens turn from “invaders” into “conspirators” who surreptitiously mingle with and insinuate themselves among the inhabitants of the Earth: they enter the everyday lives of human beings, leading to an internal and thus endemic revolution in society, which is invaded by alien forces that blend in with humans, adopting their form in order to gain the upper hand.

Similarly, “Kitchens & Invaders” tells of the gradual but inexorable mutation of kitchen utensils into machines and robots. This is an army of “invaders” which, since the mid-nineteenth century and the advent of industrialisation, has spread out and taken the place of many human activities in the kitchen. The aim is to follow the evolution in Italy of these “conspirators” – kitchens and electrical appliances – from the first documented objects through to 2015, also with an eye on design in international industry.

// L’ottava edizione del Triennale Design Museum, in occasione di Expo Milano 2015, propone “Cucine & Ultracorpi”, a cura di Germano Celant. Sviluppata in stretta collaborazione con Silvana Annicchiarico e il Triennale Design Museum, l’edizione del Museo s’ispira sin dal titolo al libro di fantascienza L’invasione degli Ultracorpi, scritto da Jack Finney nel 1955 e all’omonimo film tratto dal romanzo e girato da Don Siegel, che si sono imposti come opere di rottura e cambiamento nell’immaginario collettivo. Nella narrazione gli alieni da “invasori” divengono “cospiratori” capaci di confondersi e insinuarsi tra gli abitanti della terra: entrano nel quotidiano degli esseri umani, attuando una rivoluzione interna e perciò endemica della società, invasa da forze aliene che si mescolano agli umani e ne assumono la forma per prendere il sopravvento.

Analogamente, “Cucine & Ultracorpi” vuole raccontare la lenta quanto inesorabile trasformazione degli utensili da cucina in macchine e automi. Un’armata “di invasori” che, dalla metà del XIX secolo con l’avvento dell’industrializzazione, è dilagata arrivando a sostituire molte pratiche umane del cucinare. L’intento è di tracciare l’evoluzione in Italia dei “cospiratori”, cucine ed elettrodomestici, dalla prima emergenza documentabile fino al 2015, anche in relazione a episodi della progettazione dell’industria internazionale.
