The extraordinary career of British fashion designer Alexander McQueen is now on display at Victoria and Albert Museum in London after 18 months of arrangement. Edited and expanded after the 2011 show at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York, Savage Beauty will take you into his visionary and complex world showcasing his work from the academy years (1992) to his unfinished A/W collection of 2010.

The show, organized in thematic rooms, contains more than 240 ensembles and accessories, with no photographic materials on behalf of music and footages. Each gallery point out the several essences of McQueen, stating his profound freedom of thought and expression and his romantic imagination.

Looks like the most exciting room of the show is the Cabinet of Curiosities, in which outfits and accessories are displayed in a double height gallery, from floor to ceiling. In the centre of the room stands the dress which was sprayed with paint by two robots in the SS 1999 show while across the walls people can appreciate the result of his diverse collaborations with other great talents.

Another moment sure not to be missed is Pepper’s Ghost, the hologram which was displayed in the finale to the AW 2006 collection The Widows of Culloden. In a blacked out room you can see Kate Moss appear in an ethereal gown made made of silk organza, turning ghost-like in the air and then vanishing all of a sudden.

Aggiornata e allargata dopo essere stata esposta nel 2011 al MET di New York, Savage Beauty vi farà immergere nel suo mondo visionario mostrando tutto il suo lavoro partendo dagli anni dell’università (1992) fino ad arrivare alla sua ultima collezione a/i del 2010 mai terminata.

L’esposizione, suddivisa in gallerie tematiche, include più di 240 outfit e accessori, scegliendo di non utilizzare materiale fotografico in favore di filmati e musiche. Ogni singola sala rivela le sfaccettate essenze di McQueen, affermando la sua profonda libertà di pensiero ed espressione e la sua romantica immaginazione. 

Sembra poi che il momento più emozionante di tutta la mostra sia la Cabinet of Curiosities (Stanza delle meraviglie), installata all’interno di una galleria a doppia altezza in cui gli oggetti occupano tutto lo spazio, dal pavimento al soffitto. Al centro della sala si erge poi il vestito che durante la sfilata p/e del 1999 veniva spruzzato di inchiostro da due robot mentre alle pareti il pubblico può osservare il risultato delle sue tante collaborazioni con altrettanti grandi talenti.

Un’altro momento sicuramente da non perdere è Pepper’s Ghost, l’ologramma mostrato nel finale della sfilata a/i The widows of Culloden del 2006. In una stanza buia si assiste all’apparizione (olografica) di Kate Moss con indosso un etereo abito di organza, che si trasforma quasi in un fantasma e svanisce poi all’improvviso.
