Patricia Urquiola’s project for the Via Durini showroom involved a sequence of architectural interventions, divided into two phases, which began by rearranging the display areas and then went on to connect them to the offices and the cupola. These various spaces represent the new ‘In-store Philosophy 3’ language whereby materials and colours are used to add rhythm to the spaces and define the working and communal areas.
Environments are divided by perforated metal laminates and sheets of anodised aluminium with vertical grills that offer different perspectives depending on the light and one’s position. Traditional materials are revisited in a contemporary manner. For example, the Venetian terrazzo flooring, which separates the two side wings of the showroom decked out in a parquet floor, acts as an entrance runway that leads to the helix shaped staircase in varnished iron. Here a thin metal sheet wraps around itself in a spatially articulate gesture, moving towards the cupola overhead.
The pre-existing cupola has been partially sectioned off to connect it to the new areas. The interior, with most of the previous works now removed, is clad with soundproofing material. On the outside, on the other hand, it is covered in green coated copper sheeting. In the centre, the skylight stands like a looking glass to the sky and the overhead light filters right into the showroom. At the entrance to the cupola a walkway in Ceppo di Gre stone, flanked by a garden of grasses, leads to the terrace, covered in composite wood planks.
Two French windows allow access to the new Poltrona Frau Group offices. Arranged in three distinct spaces, they include a semi-public space known as the “Social Area” where communication activities, events, meetings with architects and designers and Cassina workshops will take place. To one side, there’s a large Infinito bookshelf by Franco Albini which brings together a large selection of books from the 5 Continents Editions publishing house and a lounge area looking out onto the terrace, while on the other there is a row of tables lined with comfortable benches, and seating for informal meetings and work areas. At the far end there is a kitchen, to be used for collective dinners, show cooking and events, while on the opposite side there’s a large meeting room.
From this semi-public area, one can access the management offices in the North and South wings.

Le aree vengono suddivise da lamine di metallo perforate e lastre di alluminio anodizzato con griglie verticali che offrono diverse prospettive a seconda della luce e della posizione.
Materiali tradizionali sono reinterpretati in chiave contemporanea. Il seminato veneziano, che separa le due ali laterali dello showroom rivestite in parquet, funge da passerella di ingresso, conducendo alla nuova scala elicoidale in ferro verniciato: una lamiera metallica sottile si avvolge, con un gesto spazialmente rigoroso, verso la cupola sovrastante.
La cupola preesistente è stata parzialmente sezionata per collegarla ai nuovi spazi. All’interno, ripulita dagli interventi precedenti, è rivestita di un materiale fonoassorbente; l’esterno, invece, è ricoperto di lastre di rame patinate in verde. Al centro, un lucernario figura come un oculo sul cielo: la luce zenitale sino allo showroom.
All’ingresso della cupola un camminamento in pietra di ceppo di Gre, affiancato da un giardino di graminacee, porta alla terrazza, in tavole di legno composito.
Due porte finestre permettono l’accesso ai nuovi uffici di Poltrona Frau Group. Articolati in tre aree distinte, includono uno spazio semipubblico denominato “Area Social”, dove si svolgeranno le attività di comunicazione, eventi, incontri con architetti e designer e workshop di Cassina. Da un lato, una grande libreria Infinito di Franco Albini che raccoglie un’ampia selezione dei libri della casa editrice 5 Continents Editions e una zona lounge affacciate sulla terrazza; dall’altro tavoli in linea serviti da una comoda panca, gruppi di sedute per riunioni informali o zone di lavoro. Alle estremità sono collocate una cucina, destinata a cene collettive, show cooking,
eventi; dall’altro lato, una ampia sala riunioni. Infine, da questa prima ala semipubblica si accede agli uffici dirigenziali, nell’ala Nord e Sud.
