Souvenir d’un futur // Laurent Kronental

French photographer Laurent Kronental has spent the last four years documenting the life of senior citizens in the “Grand Ensembles” (large housing projects) around Paris. These neighborhoods were erected between the 1950s and the 1980s to address the housing crisis, urban migration and the inflow of foreign migrants while meeting modern comfort needs, and today are often stigmatized by the media and marginalized by public opinion. In sharp contrast with these cliché views, and fascinated by these projects’ ambitious and dated modernistic features, Laurent Kronental was moved by the living conditions of these urban veterans who have aged there, and who, he feels, are the memory of the locus.

His photographs are tinted with melancholic, yet brave disenchantment. The majestic mass of the futuristic vessels seems to drift across an ocean of concrete. But the presence of old people, which might seem unexpected in such settings, paradoxically hints at a possible hope, as if past illusions were not all dead yet. Using a 4×5” analog camera, the artist highlights the architectural geometry without stamping out the details.

With Souvenir d’un Futur, Laurent Kronental wanted to create the atmosphere of a parallel world mixing past and future while consciously conveying the impression of towns that would be emptied of their residents. In this magnificent and ghostly world, the structures of our cities would be titanic, gobble the human, the product of our fears and hopes for an organization of the city.

The serie is now on show at the National Library of France called Bibliothèque François Mitterrand in Paris as part of La Bourse du Talent till February 7th.

// Il fotografo francese Laurent Kronental ha passato gli ultimi quattro anni a visitare e documentare con bellissime fotografie la vita degli anziani abitanti nei “Grand Ensembles” di Parigi, area periferica costruita tra gli anni 50 e 80 per rispondere alla crisi abitativa, gli spostamenti urbani e l’arrivo dei migranti, che oggi viene stigmatizzata dai media e messa da parte dall’opinione pubblica. In forte contrasto con queste vedute un po’ cliché, e affascinato dalle caratteristiche ambiziose e moderniste oggi fuori moda, Laurent è stato spinto dalle condizioni di vita di questi veterani urbani che sono invecchiati li, e che, lui sente essere la memoria del luogo.

Le sue fotografie sono tinte di malinconia, ma al tempo stesso di coraggioso disincanto. La massa imponente delle navi futuristiche sembra andare alla deriva attraverso un oceano di cemento. Ma la presenza di anziani, che potrebbe sembrare inaspettata in tali contesti, suggerisce paradossalmente una possibile speranza, come se le illusioni del passato non fossero ancora tutte morte. Servendosi di una camera analogica 4×5”, l’artista ha evidenziato la geometria architettonica senza rinunciare al dettaglio.

Con Souvenir d’un Futur, Laurent Kronental ha voluto creare un’atmosfera di un mondo parallelo mescolando passato e futuro trasmettendo consapevolmente al tempo stesso l’impressione di una realtà cittadina che sembra svuotata dei suoi abitanti. In questo mondo magnifico e spettrale, le strutture delle nostre città sembrano titaniche, mangiano l’uomo, il prodotto delle nostre paure e speranze per un’organizzazione della città.
