When embroidery becomes art // Jose Romussi

When in 2010 Jose Romussi decided to become an artist he was living in New York, years after lots of travels with his mother, following her while she was painting and teaching Art around Chile. Spending lots of time alone gave him the chance to think and elaborate his own form of art, starting from focusing on drawings. First he approached the technique of collage but he was not really feeling really into it because:

“these techniques didn’t allow me to do what I really want it to do, so I started exploring with other medias and that is how I started adding some embroidery to my work and I felt that my ideas were getting somewhere”.

So he began adding pops of color to ballerina tutus, conveying his interest mostly for aesthetic beauty. However, his most recent works show he’s investing on a more critical stance.
His latest serie, ANTI-SERIE, marks a turning point of his vision. The change began during a travel to Mexico when he was looking for new shapes and materials for his last exhibitions, but apparently found more than that. He then started putting aside the photograph, the principal structure that was using in his last exhibitions, to venture on an unknown project. The fabric and the support of his embroidery is now the main problematic, and this give him more freedom to evolve his ideas.

Now based in Berlin, Jose travels all the time to find new ways and techniques to develop his art.

//Quando nel nel 2010 Jose Romussi ha deciso di intraprendere la carriera d’artista si trovava a New York, dopo anni passati in viaggio con sua madre, seguendola durante i suoi spostamenti in Cile dove insegnava Arte e dipingeva. Passare così tanto tempo da solo ha fatto sì che Jose avesse la possibilità di pensare ed elaborare una sua particolare forma d’arte, iniziando a concentrarsi sul disegno. Come prima tecnica da sperimentare ha scelto il collage ma non gli sembrava quella giusta poiché:

“queste tecniche non mi permettevano di fare quello che volevo, così ho iniziato ad esplorare altri media ed è così che ho iniziato ad aggiungere qualche ricamo ai miei lavori e ho subito sentito che le mie idee andavano da qualche parte”.

Così ha iniziato ad aggiungere colori pop ai tutù delle ballerine, veicolando il suo interesse maggiore per la bellezza estetica. In ogni caso, i suoi lavori più recenti sta adottando una linea di pensiero più critica.
La sua ultima serie, ANTI-SERIE, segna un punto di svolta del suo modo di vedere. Il cambiamento è iniziato durante un viaggio in Messico quando stava cercando nuove forme e materiali per le sue ultime mostre. E sembra proprio che abbia trovato qualcosa in più. Ha così iniziato a mettere da parte la fotografia, struttura principale che era solito usare per le sue esposizioni, per avventurarsi in un nuovo progetto ignoto. Il tessuto ed il supporto per i suoi ricami sono adesso le problematiche principali, e questo gli concede maggiore libertà per sviluppare le sue idee.

Jose vive ora a Berlino, ma viaggia spesso sempre alla ricerca di nuovi modi e tecniche per elaborare la sua arte.
