Warde is an urban installation conceived by HQ Architects for Valero Square, heart of Jerusalem, and located at the entry of the main open market and a tram line station. The installation is part of the municipality’s effort in trying to find a way to improve the urban space of the chaotic city center.

Warde does not attempt to fight the chaos, but instead tries to “tighten up urban space”, to spread around such fantastic elements that would overcome the reality of the square on one-hand, and will be able to stand for themselves in the non-realistic situation of Jerusalem on the other.

Four giants inflatable flowers (9meters high and wide) were carefully positioned to be viewed from all around the square, and from the market near by. Each is separately inflated and reacts to the situation around it, so that whenever pedestrians walk by, the flowers inflate and open up, and then deflate and close as the people walk away. If a by-passer is looking for a moment of shade during the hot summer days, the flower will inflate and stay open until the person leaves. When the tram is approaching the station – all four flowers will inflate at once and signal the shoppers to hurry if they want to catch the tram.

Warde non tenta però di combattere il caos esistente, cerca invece di “alleggerire lo spazio urbano”, installando elementi così fantastici che aiuterebbero a superare la triste realtà della piazza.

Quattro grandissimi fiori gonfiabili (9m di altezza per 9m di larghezza) sono stati così accuratamente posizionati per essere visti da ogni punto della piazza e dal mercato adiacente. Ognuna delle sculture funziona separatemene dalle altre e reagisce alle condizioni che la circondano. Così quando i pedoni camminano nei dintorni, i fiori, pieni di aria, si apriranno e si gonfieranno e quando la gente a piedi si allontanerà torneranno alla posizione iniziale. Se un passante, nei caldi giorni estivi, cercherà un luogo ombreggiato per ripararsi dal sole, il fiore si gonfierà e rimarrà aperto fino a quando la persona vi sarà sotto. Anche quando il tram si avvicinerà alla stazione, tutti i quattro fiori si apriranno contemporaneamente segnalandone l’arrivo.
