Maarten Baas, known in the world of design as the one who chase the conflict between beauty and ugliness, has been enlisted from SDK Vastgoed to collaborate with them in creating a new and striking building in one of the Netherlands’ ugliest places (fourth place in the top ten), Marconiplein (‘Marconi Plaza’) in Eindhoven.
Now it has been renamed De Bakermat (‘birthplace’ or ‘breeding ground’) and Baas, on behalf of SDK, launched a competition between two teams, each comprising four Dutch and foreign architects from Van Aken Architecten, challenging them to work out of their comfort zones in order to conceive the design for an iconic building.
The two teams will each be unveiling their building design during the Dutch Design Week (17-25 October) and the visitors to the event will judge the proposals together with a jury of members from relevant fields. Trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort will chair the expert jury, which will also comprise architect Jelle Houben, architect Douwe Boonstra, industrial designer Ruud Nordt and SDK director Ferdinand Gremmen. Members of the public can cast their vote via web on debakermatvan.nl and live at the Kazerne, the venue where the two designs will be exhibited. The winning design will then be announced during the presentation of the Dirk Roosenburg Award on Friday 23 October.

Oggi ha preso il nome di De Bakermat (“luogo di nascita” o “luogo fertile”) e Baas, per conto della SDK, ha lanciato un concorso tra due team, ognuno formato da quattro architetti olandesi e stranieri dello studio Van Aken Architecten, sfidandoli a lavorare fuori dalle proprie zone di comfort al fine di elaborare un progetto per un edificio iconico.
I due team sveleranno i loro lavori durante la settimana del design olandese (17-25 Ottobre) ed i visitatori dell’evento saranno invitati a giudicare i progetti insieme ad una giuria di esperti del settore. La scopritrice di tendenze Lidewij Edelkoort presiederà la giuria di esperti, alla quale prenderanno parte anche l’architetto Jelle Houben, l’architetto Douwe Boonstra, l’industrial designer Ruud Nordt ed il direttore di SDK Ferdinand Gremmen. Il pubblico potrà votare via web su debakermatvan.nl and sul posto al Kazerne, luogo dove le due proposte saranno esposte. Il progetto vincitore sarà annunciato durante la presentazione del Dirk Roosenburg Award Venerdì 23 Ottobre.
