The Collectivity Project // Olafur Eliasson, NY

Presented by Friends of the High Line, The collectivity project is the new participatory installation by Olafur Eliasson for High Line Art. The imaginary cityscape built with over two tons of white LEGO® bricks represents the debut of the artist in North America.

For the occasion, Eliasson invited 10 architecture firms – Bjarke Ingles Group, David M. Schwarz Architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, James Corner Field Operations, OMA New York, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Robert A.M. Stern Architects, Selldorf Architects, SHoP, Steven Holl Architects – to create each an imaginary structure.

Visitors to the High Line are welcomed to play with the installation, building and rebuilding the architect-designed structures over time. As the inevitable entropy of the piece begins to soften the hard edges of the designed structures, and mounds of loose pieces gather in the corners between buildings, a beautiful collective creation takes form. Installed in the growing shadow of the real estate development of Hudson Yards, the mutable, human-scale artwork provides a compelling counterpoint to the concrete-and-steel towers that form the project’s backdrop.

Per l’occasione Eliasson ha invitato dieci studi di architettura – Bjarke Ingles Group, David M. Schwarz Architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, James Corner Field Operations, OMA New York, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Robert A.M. Stern Architects, Selldorf Architects, SHoP, Steven Holl Architects – a progettare ognuno un edificio immaginario.

I visitatori dell’High Line sono invitati a prendere parte all’iniziativa, giocando, costruendo e ricostruendo le strutture ideate dagli architetti per tutto il periodo in cui l’istallazione sarà aperta. Succede così che non appena l’inevitabile entropia scaturita dall’operazione inizia a smussare i rigidi spigoli delle strutture preesistenti, e ammassi di mattoncini sfusi iniziano ad ammucchiarsi negli angoli tra gli edifici, prende forma una magnifica creazione collettiva.

Installata all’ombra crescente dell’area immobiliare di Hudson Yards, quest’opera a scala umana in continuo mutamento rappresenta un efficace elemento di contrasto alle torri in cemento e acciaio che fanno da sfondo al progetto.
