To mark the sixtieth birthday of photographer Anton Corbijn, the Gemeentemuseum and Museum of Photography mounted a double exhibition: Hollands Deep + Anton Corbijn 1 + 2 + 3 + 4. It is the most complete retrospective of his work ever held and constitutes a unique homage to one of the world’s foremost portrait photographers.

HOLLANDS DEEP reveals how Corbijn has evolved over the last forty years from an ordinary music fan into a successful photographer and multi-faceted creative artist. It will start with the grainy black-and-white photos he took of musicians in the 1970s and ’80s and show how he constantly expanded his horizon to address new themes and experiment with different techniques and materials in later series. The aim of this major retrospective is to show Anton Corbijn’s evolution as a self-taught photographer and to reveal the diversity of his subjects and techniques. Corbijn himself calls it his ‘Best of’.

For 1-2-3-4 (the show now being prolonged till August 16), by contrast, Corbijn made a one-off expedition into his archive of music photos and selected 400 of his pictures of bands and solo music artists. The images bear witness to the close relationships he developed with many of them. Many of these pictures have never been seen before. CNN on 1-2-3-4: “(…) if these music legends could climb down from the walls, they would form a line-up with no equivalent in any music festival we know of.”

Si tratta della retrospettiva più completa mai organizzata sul suo lavoro e rappresenta un omaggio unico ad uno dei ritrattisti più famosi al mondo.

Hollands Deep rivela come Anton Corbijn si sia evoluto nel corso degli ultimi quarant’anni da semplice fan della musica a fotografo di successo e sfaccettato artista creativo. La mostra ha inizio con gli scatti in bianco e nero degli anni 70 e 80 in cui ritraeva musicisti e prosegue mostrando come abbia espanso in maniera costante il suo orizzonte per abbracciare nuovi temi e sperimentare nuove tecniche e materiali nelle ultime serie. L’obiettivo di questa grande retrospettiva è quello di presentare l’evoluzione di Corbijn come fotografo auto-didatta e per rivelare la diversità dei suoi temi e tecniche. Corbijn stesso ha parlato di questa esposizione come del suo ‘Best of’.

Per 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 (ora prolungata fino al 16 Agosto), al contrario, Corbijn ha effettuato una straordinaria escursione nel suo archivio di fotografie musicali e selezionato quattrocento delle immagini di band e artisti solisti e le immagini esposte testimoniano gli stretti rapporti che il fotografo aveva sviluppato con molti di loro. Molte di queste immagini non sono mai state mostrate al pubblico. La CNN sulla mostra ha affermato: “…Se queste leggende della musica potessero saltar giù dalle pareti, formerebbero una line-up senza eguali tra tutti i festival che conosciamo”.
