Healing the broken and preserving the unbroken are the basic concepts of Yoko Ono’s new artworks for illy Art Collection, exclusively released in these days on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 1960–1971 displayed at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York till September 7, 2015.

Mended Cups, the new illy Art Collection signed by Yoko Ono, consists of six cups that bear gold, ‘shattered’ and ‘mended’ crack lines – accompanied by six individual saucers that state, in Yoko Ono’s handwriting, six catastrophic events that have affected the world; some have directly affected her life, and others only indirectly, yet bringing death to millions of people. Each saucer states the date and place of the tragic event and concludes with the words “… mended in 2015.”

The seventh cup in the collection, Unbroken Cup, is untouched with no cracked or mended lines, reflecting peace and hope with Ono’s handwritten words on the saucer, “This cup will never be broken as it will be under your protection”.

For this collection, Yoko Ono looked at the art of Kintsugi, the Japanese technique of fixing broken or cracked pottery with gold as a glue: a philosophy that treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, a precious detail rather than something to disguise.

Mended Cups, la nuova illy Art Collection firmata da Yoko Ono è composta da sei tazzine che mostrano delle crepe aggiustate con l’oro, accompagnate da sei diversi piattini che raccontano, scritte a mano da lei, sei eventi catastrofici che hanno colpito la terra; alcuni hanno avuto un impatto diretto sulla sua vita, altri solo indiretto, portando la morte a milioni di persone. Ogni piattino riporta la data e il luogo del tragico evento e chiude con le parole “… riparato nel 2015”.

La settima tazzina della collezione, Unbroken Cup, è intatta, senza crepe né riparazioni ed esprime pace e speranza con le parole di Ono scritte sul piattino: “This cup will never be broken as it will be under your protection” (“Questa tazza non si romperà mai finché sarà sotto la tua protezione”).

Per questa collezione, Ono ha usato la metafora dell’antica arte giapponese del Kintsugi, una tecnica di riparazione delle ceramiche rotte o incrinate che usa l’oro come collante: una filosofia che concepisce la rottura e la riparazione come parti integranti della storia di un oggetto, un dettaglio prezioso, importante e non un elemento da nascondere.
