Kaari collection sketch by E + R Bouroullec which premiered on the designers’ Instagram account on February 1st.
February 2015 Stockholm Design Week has been the background for the launch of a new collection of furniture by Artek. Premiered on the Bouroullec Instagram account a few days ahead of the fair, Kaari is the result of the first time collaboration between the finnish company and the french designer brothers.
The collection consists of two sized tables (both rectangular and round shape), a desk, a wall console and several wall-mounted shelves. As we can see from the sketch above, the collection witnesses the pursuit of a classic rational design, typical of nordic modus operandi. It is indeed, based on a very simple, yet smart structure that is a combination of two materials: wood and steel.
It all started from the idea of a new table, an item deserving more consideration for the designers:
“While there have been hundreds of memorable chairs, only a few tables have made design history” said E. and R. Bourollec.
The result is a new supporting element made of a triangular bent steel band (which shape gave the name Kaari – arch in Finnish – to the collection). Every steel element comes with a wooden plank that helps it carrying the load.
“Soon it became evident that the same system could also be used to construct wall-mounted objects such as single shelves on brackets and entire shelf units” said the duo.
With Kaari, Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec developed a new way to use two materials, wood and steel, that has been fundamental for Artek tradition so far.

Debuttata qualche giorno prima della fiera sul profilo Instagram dello studio Bouroullec, Kaari è il risultato della prima collaborazione tra l’azienda e i fratelli designer francesi.
La collezione consta di due tavoli di diverse misure (di forma rettangolare e circolare), una scrivania, una console e diverse (per forma e dimensione) mensole a muro. Come mostra lo schizzo preparatorio, la collezione testimonia il perseguimento di un classico design razionale, proprio del modus operandi nordico. Infatti, Kaari si basa su una struttura estremamente semplice ma al contempo brillante che risulta dalla combinazione di legno e acciaio.
Tutto è partito dall’idea di un nuovo tavolo, un oggetto che per i due designer è meritevole di maggiore attenzione:
“Mentre ci sono state centinaia di sedie memorabili, soltanto pochi tavoli hanno fatto la storia del design” hanno spiegato E. e R. Bouroullec.
Il risultato è un nuovo elemento di supporto composto da una banda di acciaio curvato di forma triangolare (la cui forma ha fornito il nome Kaari – arco in finlandese – alla collezione). Ogni parte in acciaio è accostata ad una barra in legno che aiuta a sostenere il peso.
“Presto è diventato evidente che lo stesso sistema poteva essere usato per costruire oggetti da appendere a parete come singole mensole su staffe o intere librerie” hanno continuato.
Con Kaari, Erwan e Ronan Bouroullec hanno sviluppato un nuovo modo di utilizzare due materiali, legno e acciaio, storici nell’intera produzione di Artek.
