The Soft Dome is an installation designed for the National Museum of Singapore by Atelier Yok Yok. It takes place in the Rotunda space of the Museum, for the Children’s Season around the theme «connections» during June and July 2017.
The Rotunda of the National Museum of Singapore is a singular space.
Its brightness within a circular and permeable plan extruded vertically until the dome, as well as the arcs that surround it evoking their architectural heritage, give the visitor the feeling of being at the heart of the museum. The eye wants to rise and this is where they thought of an inverted dome.
The aim is to connect adults and the children with the architecture that surrounds them. The designers wanted the visitors to feel the heritage of the museum by its architectural codes, being in an inverted dome – an immersive and hemispheric installation, as a mirror of the dome above them. They propose to play with the architectural codes of the place in a contemporary way reversing the cupola.
Once they enter the space, they see that a strange protrusion is filling the whole Rotunda, almost oppressive, but transparent.
After turning around it guided by curiosity, visitors can find an entry and finally appreciate the entirety of the free vertical space. Once inside, his feeling of the circularity and monumentality of the Rotunda is increased… Now that he feels comfortable, he can enjoy the view and a playful experience to remember…
// Soft Dome è la nuova installazione di Atelier Yok Yok ideata per il National Museum of Singapore. Si sviluppa all’interno della Rotonda del Museo, realizzata in occasione della Children’s season, attorno al tema «connessioni» durante i mesi di Giugno e Luglio 2017.
La Rotonda del National Museum di Singapore è uno spazio singolare. La sua luminosità entro una pianta circolare e porosa che si estende verticalmente fino alla cupola, così come gli archi che la sovrastano evocando la sua eredità architettonica, donano al visitatore la sensazione di essere nel cuore del museo. L’occhio tende a salire ed è proprio da qui che i designer sono partiti per pensare alla cupola inversa.
L’obiettivo è di connettere adulti e più piccoli con l’architettura che li circonda. I designer vogliono che il visitatore percepisca il patrimonio del museo attraverso i codici architettonici. Si trovano così in una cupola inversa, in un’installazione immersiva ed emisferica, come specchio della cupola sopra di loro.
Una volta entrati nello spazio, ci si accorge che una strana protrusione riempie la rotonda, quasi oppressiva se non fosse trasparente. Dopo averci girato intorno, spinti dalla curiosità, si trova un’entrata, e finalmente si apprezza l’interezza dello spazio verticale. Dentro poi, la percezione della circolarità e monumentali della Rotonda è amplificata.. e qui, ora che il visitatore si sente a suo agio, può godersi la vista e la gioiosa esperienza da ricordare.
