New York Textile Month

To promote the survival of the different textile expressions, the first ever New York Textile Month was initiated, a celebration of textiles all over the city and its boroughs.

The New York Textile Month will be a month long city wide festival designed to celebrate textile creativity and promote textile awareness. Created by Lidewij Edelkoort, trend forecaster and Dean of Hybrid Studies at The New School and assisted by Willem Schenk, this multiple-location event will gather all voices and expressions concerning textiles, bringing together museums, galleries, showrooms, retailers, design studios, students and the general public.

All of this because, as Edelkoort says:

“At a time when textile heritage is at a crossroads and centuries of tradition and knowledge are being compromised, the need arises to protect these endangered species in the same way we have come to defend our animal friends in the natural world; therefore we urgently need to discuss and talk about textile again.”

Il New York Textile Month sarà un festival lungo tutto il mese di settembre e celebrerà la creatività del mondo tessile e ne promuoverà la diffusione e la conoscenza. Ideato dalla scopritrice di tendenze e preside del corso Hybrid Studies alla New School, Lidewij Edelkoort insieme a Willem Schenk, l’evento dalle multiple location raggrupperà le voci e le espressioni che ruotano intorno a questo mondo, unendo musei, gallerie, showroom, negozianti, studi di design, studenti e il pubblico cittadino.

Tutto ciò perché come ha spiegato Edelkoort:

“In un tempo in cui l’eredità del tessile è ad un bivio e secoli di tradizione e conoscenza vengono compromessi, la necessità di proteggere queste specie in via di estinzione cresce allo stesso modo in cui dobbiamo cercare di difendere i nostri amici animali; per questo c’è un’urgenza di discutere e parlare di tessile ancora una volta”.
