Renowned Warsaw-based studio Nizio Design International won the competition to design the Mausoleum of the Martyrdom of Polish Villages in Michniów, back in 2009 and it is now scheduled to open in late 2016 – early 2017. The building site of the Mausoleum is now undergoing the successive fifth stage of construction works. The Mausoleum’s design envisaged a monolithic sculptural architectural form to give room to a multimedia exhibition which through its shape is to convey the dramaturgy of the historical developments symbolised by Michniów itself.
The first stage of works on the construction site of the Mausoleum delivered the site fence, services building, and the car park. Also, a number of paths leading to the grave were built at the time. Phase two involved building the underground structures, phase three produced the foundation of the open parts, and phase four, the most difficult so far, resulted in the construction of the essential components of the building. Currently underway is phase five whose objective is to build the approaches from the grave to the Mausoleum building.
The building has a characteristic segmented structure. Its tissue is cut across by cracks that divide the architectural form into closed and open parts. This form is the resultant of the sculptural inspirations and thinking of the architecture’s consistency with the historical narrative. Also, it was informed by the need to adjust the building to the shape of its site featuring 10-15% slope of the ground. The subsequent closed and open segments – there are five of the former and six of the latter – lead the visitors through the exhibition that shows the history of the pacification and presents its subsequent stages and the process of escalating repression. In parallel to the narrative the building undergoes deformation and “destruction”, which symbolically conveys the annihilation that took place here.

Mentre la sua apertura è programmata per la fine dell’anno, inizio 2017, il cantiere in questi giorni è passato alla quinta fase di lavori. Il progetto del Mausoleo prevede una forma architettonica monolitica scultorea che andrà ad ospitare un’esposizione multimediale e che attraverso la sua forma tenterà di trasmettere la drammaturgia degli avvenimenti storici che simboleggiano Michniow stessa.
Il primo stadio dei lavori nel cantiere ha riguardato la recinzione del sito, servizi e parcheggio, insieme alla realizzazione di vicoli per gli scavi. La seconda fase ha interessato le strutture sotterranee, la fase tre ha visto la realizzazione delle fondamenta delle parti aperte, e la quarta fase, la più difficile fino ad ora, ha dato origine alle componenti principali dell’edificio. Al momento si sta procedendo con la fase cinque, obiettivo della quale è costruire gli accessi dagli scavi all’edificio del Mausoleo.
L’edificio ha una caratteristica struttura segmentata. Il suo tessuto è tagliato trasversalmente da spaccature che suddividono la forma architettonica in parti chiuse ed aperte. Questa forma è il risultato di ispirazioni scultoree e ragionamenti sulla coerenza dell’architettura con il racconto storico. Inoltre, è stata ispirata dalla necessità dell’edificio di adattarsi alla forma del sito su cui veniva costruito, che prevedeva una pendenza del terreno del 10-15%. I successivi segmenti aperti e chiusi – ce ne sono cinque nel precedente e sei nell’ultimo – guidano i visitatori attraverso l’esposizione che mostra la storia della pacificazione, i successivi stadi ed il processo di repressione crescente. In parallelo alla storia l’edificio si sottopone a deformazione e decontrazione, concetti che simbolicamente veicolano lo sterminio che vi ebbe luogo.
