Secret code, this is the name of the photo-project by young italian photographer Carlo Cafferini, tells the story about Pisa and its buildings’ facades during the phases of wait and preparation for the 16th of June celebration, the Luminara di San Ranieri.

The days before the Luminara, according to the tradition, the buildings façades are embellished with hundreds of white wooden boards, the so-called biancherie in italian, arranged to mimic the architectural style and structure of the residence as well as in different and curious shapes. Hanging on windows and doors, the strange white patterns look like a mysterious mix of signs and symbols, just waiting to be deciphered.

The night of the feast, the boards are adorned with thousands of candles that will enlighten, only with their flickering lights, the lungarni — sides of the river Arno — creating an extraordinary show.

Nei giorni antecedenti la Luminara, come da tradizione, le facciate dei palazzi si abbelliscono di assi di legno bianche, le cosiddette biancherie, che disposte a seguire le forme di porte e finestre ma anche in forme libere sembrano comunicare in un misterioso codice segreto.

La sera della festa, su tutte le biancherie vengono posizionati migliaia di piccoli lumini che illumineranno i Lungarni, dal tramonto all’alba del giorno successivo dando vita ad uno spettacolo straordinario.
