New Yorker’s 90th anniversary covers

90th anniversary has come for The New Yorker magazine and for the occasion magazine’s editor, David Remnick, asked art director François Mouly to think about a special way to celebrate the unique date, who, of course, immediately went for the cover.

Starting from the very first one (February 1925) which depicted a dandy man with a monocle, later named Eustace Tilley, they selected 9 portraits from 9 artists (some of the magazine regulars and some newcomers) suggesting different visions of Eustace also through the using of different artistic techniques: from oil painting to collage, from pen to digital art.

“Each brings Eustace Tilley squarely into the twenty-first century, and proves that art is as alive on the cover of the magazine today as it was in 1925” says Mouly.

Partendo dalla prima in assoluto (datata Febbraio 1925), raffigurante un dandy con un monocolo, solo in un secondo momento soprannominato Eustace Tilley, hanno selezionato nove ritratti opera di nove artisti (alcuni già collaboratori della rivista e altri nuovi) che offrono visioni differenti dello stesso personaggio anche per le tecniche artistiche utilizzate: dalla pittura ad olio al collage, dalla penna all’arte digitale.

“Ognuno di questi ritratti trascina onestamente Eustace Tilley nel 21esimo secolo, e attesta che l’arte è viva sulla copertina della rivista esattamente come lo era nel 1925” ha spiegato Mouly.
