Today we introduce you to an artist/designer or what he likes to call himself, a paper engineer, Matt Shlian.
With his early studies in ceramics, after graduating he started being interested in everything. His love for geometry of course led him to paper and consequently to pop up books. Dissecting them and figuring out how they worked pushed Shlian to chase something bigger. He now works side by side with scientists using paper engineering as a way to understand the flexible nature of micro-structures.
The result is what you can see in our selection of his paper sculpture below, as he says “complex works but not complicated“. You can also watch him at work with an installation commissioned by Levi’s in the following video.

Con precedenti studi sulla ceramica, dopo la laurea ha iniziato ad interessarsi di qualsiasi cosa. La sua predilezione per la geometria l’ha spinto a familiarizzare con la carta e di conseguenza ad avvicinarsi ai libri pop up. Cercare di capire il modo in cui funzionavano lo ha stimolato ad inseguire qualcosa di più grande. Oggi lavora a fianco di scienziati, utilizzando l’ingegneria della carta come metodo per analizzare la natura flessibile delle micro-strutture.
Il risultato del suo lavoro è visibile nella selezione di alcune sue sculture di carta, per lui “lavori complessi ma non complicati”. Potete anche guardarlo all’opera con un’installazione commissionatagli da Levi’s.
