Chamber NYC

‘A boutique devoted to exclusive limited editions & unique works of art and design’. This is what you get when you visit Chamber, a new gallery/store located just underneath the Highline on 23rd Street, New York or online.

Opened last September, this 21st century Wunderkammer (aka Cabinet of Curiosities), displays and sells works chosen by an every two years different curator, invited by Chamber’s founder Juan Garcia Mosqueda.

The premier collection of 100 items, including vintage pieces as well as commissioned ones, was curated by Belgian duo Job and Nynke Smeets of Studio Job, whose work was long admired by Garcia Mosqueda and who share with him the same passion for stories hidden behind objects. The duo has therefore selected pieces by established and emergent names like Tom Dixon, Wim Crouwel, Dieter Rams, Alessandro Mendini, Formafantasma, Esther Janssen and Cmmnwlth.

As well as the collection, also the space needed a recognizable imprint. For that, Garcia Mosqueda enlisted MOS Architects to recreate what he had in mind: he wanted people to visit Chamber as if they were going on a visit to a crypt. As you can see from the pictures the space features a vaulted ceiling and a wall full of niches in which stories can be told through videos, audios and texts.

// “Una boutique dedicata ad esclusive edizioni limitate e uniche opere di arte e design”. Questo è quanto aspettarsi quando si varca la soglia (online e fisicamente) di Chamber, una nuova galleria/negozio situata proprio al di sotto della Highline sulla 23esima Strada.

Inaugurata lo scorso settembre, questa Wunderkammer (o anche camera delle meraviglie) del 21esimo secolo, mette in mostra e in vendita opere scelte da un curatore (sostituito ogni due anni) a sua volta scelto dal fondatore della galleria Juan Garcia Mosqueda.

La prima collezione di 100 oggetti, che includono pezzi vintage così come oggetti commissionati, è opera del duo belga Studio Job, il cui lavoro è sempre stato oggetto di ammirazione da parte di Garcia Mosqueda. Inoltre i due designer condividono con il fondatore la stessa passione per tutte le storie che si celano dietro gli oggetti. Così, i due hanno selezionato pezzi di nomi affermati come Tom Dixon, Wim Crouwel, Dieter Rams, Alessandro Mendini ed emergenti come FormaFantasma, Ester Janssen e Cmmnwlth.

Anche lo spazio, così come la collezione, necessitava di un’impronta distinguibile. Per realizzare ciò che aveva in mente, Garcia Mosqueda si è rivolto agli architetti dello studio MOS: il pubblico doveva recarsi da Chamber come se fosse stato diretto ad una cripta. E’ così, lo spazio è caratterizzato da un soffitto a volte e da una parete di nicchie al cui interno possono essere raccontate storie attraverso video, audio e testi.
